- of the Social Democratic Party, deputy prime
- minister 1982-86 and prime minister from
- 1986. After studying in Sweden and the USA,
- Carlsson became president of the Swedish
- Social Democratic Youth League in 1961. He
- was elected to the Riksdag (parliament) in
- 1964 and became a minister in 1969. With the
- return to power of the Social Democrats in
- 1982, Carlsson became deputy to Prime
- Minister Palme and, on his assassination in
- 1986, succeeded him.

- Carlucci, Frank
- 1930- . US politician, a pragmatic moderate.
- A former diplomat and deputy director of the
- CIA, he was national security adviser 1986-87
- and defence secretary 1987-89 under Reagan,
- supporting Soviet-US arms reduction. Educated
- at Princeton and Harvard, Carlucci, after
- fighting in the Korean War, was a career
- diplomat during the later 1950s and 1960s. He
- returned to the USA in 1969 to work under
- presidents Nixon, Ford and Carter, his posts
- including US ambassador to Portugal and
- deputy director of the CIA. An apolitical
- Atlanticist, Carlucci found himself out of
- step with the hawks in the Reagan
- administration, and left to work in industry
- after barely a year as deputy secretary of
- defence. In Dec 1986, after the Irangate
- scandal, he replaced John Poindexter as
- national security adviser.
