  1. 1934- . Swedish socialist politician, leader
  2. of the Social Democratic Party, deputy prime
  3. minister 1982-86 and prime minister from
  4. 1986. After studying in Sweden and the USA,
  5. Carlsson became president of the Swedish
  6. Social Democratic Youth League in 1961. He
  7. was elected to the Riksdag (parliament) in
  8. 1964 and became a minister in 1969. With the
  9. return to power of the Social Democrats in
  10. 1982, Carlsson became deputy to Prime
  11. Minister Palme and, on his assassination in
  12. 1986, succeeded him.

  14. Carlucci, Frank
  15. 1930- . US politician, a pragmatic moderate.
  16. A former diplomat and deputy director of the
  17. CIA, he was national security adviser 1986-87
  18. and defence secretary 1987-89 under Reagan,
  19. supporting Soviet-US arms reduction. Educated
  20. at Princeton and Harvard, Carlucci, after
  21. fighting in the Korean War, was a career
  22. diplomat during the later 1950s and 1960s. He
  23. returned to the USA in 1969 to work under
  24. presidents Nixon, Ford and Carter, his posts
  25. including US ambassador to Portugal and
  26. deputy director of the CIA. An apolitical
  27. Atlanticist, Carlucci found himself out of
  28. step with the hawks in the Reagan
  29. administration, and left to work in industry
  30. after barely a year as deputy secretary of
  31. defence. In Dec 1986, after the Irangate
  32. scandal, he replaced John Poindexter as
  33. national security adviser.
